Kiyan Anthony: A Rising High School Basketball Star Paving His Own Path
At just 17 years old, Kiyan Anthony is turning heads in the world of high school basketball. As a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 36 prospect in the 2025 rankings, Kiyan is well on his way to making a name for himself, standing tall at 6-foot-5. Currently attending Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, New York, his journey is closely watched by basketball aficionados and media alike.
Kiyan's father, Carmelo Anthony, is a household name in the basketball world. Leading Syracuse to the national championship in 2003 as a freshman, Carmelo's illustrious career is enshrined not only in the memories of fans but also at Syracuse University’s basketball facility, which bears his name thanks in part to his generous contributions. However, despite the inevitable comparisons and expectations, Kiyan is determined to carve his own path.
In a candid conversation, Kiyan revealed, "[My father] never pushes me to go to Syracuse just because his name is on the gym. He did so much at Syracuse. He knows that I'm my own person. I've just got to make my own decision at the end of the day." His resolve to make an independent choice highlights a maturity beyond his years, even as he navigates the pressures of living up to the Anthony name.
With a list of potential colleges that includes Auburn, USC, Florida State, Ohio State, Rutgers, and Syracuse, Kiyan has kept his options open. "Even though I know basically the whole world wants me to go to Syracuse, I still haven't made the decision yet and I still have to talk to the coaches some more and really get into detail -- like what other players are coming, how they want me to play, how I'll be coached and stuff like that," he explained. The methodical approach Kiyan is taking toward his college decision reflects his thoughtful and strategic mindset, a trait likely honed under the influence of his parents.
Behind every great athlete is a support system, and for Kiyan, his mother plays a pivotal role. "I would say everybody sees when the cameras are on [my dad] and then they're on me because I'm playing good, but I would say my mom does a lot more background stuff," he shared. "Like, when I'm going through something or I need somebody to talk to, my mom is definitely the person."
Her influence extends beyond emotional support; she also instills discipline and perseverance in Kiyan. "And she's the one who really pushes me to get in the gym, even if I don't want to. To go to school and stay on top of my grades and stuff like that," Kiyan added. It's clear that his success is a family affair, marked by a balance of professional guidance from his father and nurturing but firm encouragement from his mother.
Kiyan’s basketball journey has already seen moments of brilliance. In April, he scored 15 points at the iconic Rucker Park, a performance that only added to his growing reputation. Yet, despite these accolades, Kiyan remains grounded and focused on the future. "So I still have to finish up my visits, and then, ultimately, just make a decision. I will rely on my parents a lot with their advice and how they think a school fits me," he noted thoughtfully.
What stands out about Kiyan is not just his talent, but also his sense of responsibility towards those around him. "My friends maybe not having the same opportunities as I have, I'm the one that's tried to bring them along with me," he said. "I don't want to make them feel left out." This sense of community underscores Kiyan's character, showcasing a young man who is as committed to his roots as he is to his future.
When asked about the prospect of following in his father's footsteps at Syracuse, Kiyan emphasized his autonomy. "If it is Syracuse -- I go there a lot and I practice, I work out there -- if it is that, that's what it is. But he's never going to say, 'You gotta go to Syracuse. You gotta go there because I went there.' He's not going to make me follow in his footsteps unless I really want to.”
As Kiyan Anthony continues to make strides on the basketball court, it's clear that he is determined to shape his own destiny. With a solid support system and a clear vision for his future, he embodies the balance of talent, wisdom, and humility that marks true greatness. The basketball world eagerly anticipates what lies ahead for this rising star, who is undoubtedly making his mark in his own unique way.
