The National Basketball Association (NBA) preseason rankings have unveiled some fascinating insights into the league's top guards for the upcoming season, shedding light on both rising stars and established veterans who continue to make their mark.

Rising Stars

Tyrese Maxey's emergence as a key player for the Philadelphia 76ers is one of the standout storylines. Following James Harden's departure, Maxey embraced a more prominent role and delivered a season worthy of commendation. "After James Harden's departure, Maxey stepped into the No. 2 role in Philadelphia last season and made the leap... rewarded with the Most Improved Player award," notes Jack Maloney. Maxey's contributions have not gone unnoticed, as he now ranks 9th among guards and 24th overall.

Donovan Mitchell of the Cleveland Cavaliers also had a noteworthy season, ranking 8th among guards and 19th overall. Mitchell achieved career highs in assists, rebounds, and steals, proving his capability as the team's lone playmaker. "Mitchell registered career highs... he assumed total control of the offense... he is virtually unstoppable when he gets going downhill as a pull-up shooter," shares Brad Botkin. His dynamic play has rightfully earned him a high ranking.

Indiana Pacers' Tyrese Haliburton, ranked 7th among guards and 17th overall, had a significant impact despite an injury midway through the season. Sam Quinn highlights Haliburton's contributions: "When Tyrese Haliburton got hurt on Jan. 9, he was averaging 23.6 points per game... that's a total of 55.9 points of offense generated." Haliburton's resilience and performance have solidified his reputation as an influential guard.

Veteran Excellence

Among the established stars, Ja Morant, Devin Booker, and Jalen Brunson stand out. Morant, who holds the 6th spot among guards and ranks 16th overall, has faced challenges due to injuries and suspensions, playing only 70 games in the last two seasons. Despite these setbacks, Morant remains a thrilling player to watch. "At his best, Morant is one of the most exciting guards in the league... whether or not Morant can return to an All-NBA level is one of the biggest storylines to watch," says Jack Maloney.

Devin Booker, ranked 5th among guards and 14th overall, took on the role of point guard for the Phoenix Suns last season, showcasing his versatility. Jasmyn Wimbish remarks, "Booker has arguably become one of the most underrated players in the league... he’s liable to drop 40+ points on you... it resulted in a career-high year in assists for Booker." Booker's all-around game continues to elevate his standing in the league.

Jalen Brunson, placing 4th among guards and 13th overall, had an extraordinary postseason. "In May, Brunson became the fourth player in NBA history... to score 40 points or more in four consecutive playoff games... he had a total of 16 40-point games in 2023-24," recalls James Herbert. Brunson's playoff heroics have firmly established him as a clutch performer.

Top-Tier Talent

The top three guards demonstrate exceptional talent and consistency. Stephen Curry, the 36-year-old phenom, ranks 3rd among guards and 6th overall. Despite his age, Curry continues to mesmerize fans with his unique style of play. "Curry is still an offense unto himself with his inimitable movement and pure shot-making talent... he needs better talent around him to make his way back into title contention," comments Brad Botkin.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, sitting 2nd among guards and 4th overall, has emerged as one of the league's most dynamic players. "Last year's MVP runner-up... led the NBA in drives for the fourth straight season... shot 69% at the rim and 51% from midrange... nobody recorded more steals than Gilgeous-Alexander," notes James Herbert. His impressive all-around game solidifies his elite status.

Finally, Luka Doncic, ranked 1st among guards and 3rd overall, continues to dazzle with his extraordinary skills. At just 25 years old, Doncic is coming off the best statistical year of his career and led the league in scoring. Jasmyn Wimbish encapsulates his impact: "Even after six years in the league... he plays at the pace of paint drying on a wall, and yet... the most elite defenders couldn't stop him... he's still only 25 years old." Doncic’s remarkable performance underscores his position as the premier guard in the NBA.

As the new season approaches, these players will undoubtedly be at the forefront of discussions, captivating fans with their incredible talents and shaping the narratives within the league.
