Following an offseason that began with high expectations for the Dallas Cowboys, the team’s strategy has transitioned to making calculated additions using the resources available. As the Cowboys prepare for training camp in late July, attention has turned to finalizing their 90-man roster.
One notable move is a scheduled workout with St. Louis Battlehawks linebacker Willie Harvey Jr.
Willie Harvey Jr.'s Impressive UFL Performance
Willie Harvey Jr. has made a name for himself as one of the standout performers in the United Football League (UFL). During the league’s 10-game season, Harvey led the league with 78 total tackles. He also topped all UFL linebackers in tackles for loss (nine), passes defended (six), and forced fumbles (two).
Harvey's exceptional performance earned him a coveted spot on the UFL's inaugural All-League team as one of the three inside linebackers.
A Journey of Persistence
Harvey's journey to professional football has been marked by perseverance and determination. Undrafted out of Iowa State in 2019, he was eventually picked up by the Cleveland Browns. His time with the Browns saw him oscillate between the practice squad and the active roster, appearing in four NFL games.
Harvey's last appearance in an NFL game came during the 2021 season when he recorded a tackle in Cleveland's Week 17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite limited opportunities, he managed to make an impression on special teams, recording two tackles in his four-game NFL career.
Dallas' History with Alternative League Talent
The Dallas Cowboys have a history of successfully identifying and integrating talent from alternative football leagues. In 2022, they signed KaVontae Turpin, a wide receiver and return specialist who had earned MVP honors in the USFL. Turpin went on to earn Pro Bowl honors as a rookie.
Last season, the Cowboys signed kicker Brandon Aubrey from the USFL. Aubrey set multiple NFL records, including the most consecutive made field goals to start a career (35) and the second-most successful field goals in a single season without a miss (35). Additionally, he set the record for the most touchbacks on kickoffs in a single season (99). Aubrey's outstanding performance earned him first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2023.
The Potential Impact of Harvey
Given the Cowboys’ track record of success with players from alternative leagues, it would not be surprising to see Willie Harvey Jr. make a significant impact if the team decides to sign him. His stellar UFL performance suggests that he possesses the potential to become a regular starter or, at the very least, provide valuable depth to the roster.
Coach McCarthy's Perspective
Head Coach Mike McCarthy has consistently emphasized the team’s commitment to improving the roster. Reflecting on recent roster moves, McCarthy stated, "I think it's just kind of where we are. We're never done. I actually just met with (vice president of player personnel) Will (McClay) for quite some time this morning. We got plenty of really good players to practice and get ready. We were at 88 this time last year."
As the Cowboys gear up for the upcoming season, their focus on strategic roster additions and their knack for identifying hidden gems in alternative leagues could provide the edge they need to meet and exceed their high expectations.
