Mekhi Becton Embraces New Role with Philadelphia Eagles
In a key offseason move, Mekhi Becton signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in May, marking a fresh chapter in his professional career. Initially expected to serve as a backup for tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton has ventured into unexpected territory, shifting his focus to the guard position. This transition comes amidst Becton's battles with injuries and inconsistent play during his tenure with the New York Jets.
The Eagles' coaching staff had planned for Becton to play at guard, and he has proved adaptable by filling the gap at left guard during the team's mandatory minicamp. His presence filled a void left by Landon Dickerson, who was absent due to personal reasons and later sidelined by a lacerated toe.

"I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready," Becton emphasized.

"I feel like I don't really know the disadvantages yet, but the advantages would be my arm length compared to defensive tackles and stuff like that," Becton noted.

Transitioning from tackle to guard is no small feat, but Becton has approached the shift with a positive mindset. Reflecting on the differences between the positions, he explained, "Guard, it happens way faster. You don't have time to say, you just gotta settle with what you gotta settle with. Your feet don't have time to set up what you gotta set up. It's real faster. It's right away. Your hands gotta be ready to fire right away."
In contrast, playing at tackle offers more time to assess the defense and position oneself accordingly. "At tackle, you got a little bit of time to see what [the defense] is doing. You have time to figure out if you're in the right spot or not," Becton observed.
Despite the challenges, Becton's confidence in his ability to adapt remains high. "It's an adjustment, but it's not a hard adjustment. I can do it," he asserted.

The coming weeks will be crucial for Becton as training camp and preseason games will test his ability to adjust and perform under pressure. He is focused on being prepared to step in whenever the team needs him, eagerly awaiting opportunities to make an impact.
"I don't know what I'm gonna be when I come in here. Once I step on the field, I know I gotta be ready for whatever," Becton said confidently. His readiness to take on any challenge is a testament to his dedication and perseverance.
