Russell Wilson Named Starting QB for Steelers, Justin Fields to Play Key Role

The Pittsburgh Steelers have formalized their quarterback plans ahead of the new NFL season, appointing Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback over Justin Fields on their initial depth chart.

Fields, a former first-round pick from the Chicago Bears, put on a noteworthy performance during the training camp. Despite his impressive showing, he could not overshadow the more experienced Wilson for the top spot.

Wilson's journey through camp was not without its challenges. The nine-time Pro Bowler was on the sidelines for a significant part of the first two weeks due to a groin injury. However, Steelers' management and head coach Mike Tomlin remained steadfast in their decision to start Wilson. "Wilson has the 'pole position' and will continue to do so barring a significant injury or poor play from the nine-time Pro Bowler," Tomlin stated.

Wilson has been making encouraging progress in his recovery. During Tuesday's practice session, he participated in the Seven Shots drill for the first time, a significant milestone in his rehabilitation process. He also took 15 reps in 11-on-11 drills, showcasing his readiness to take on the primary quarterback role.

His first pass attempt in the Seven Shots drill was a touchdown pass to wide receiver George Pickens, demonstrating his precise aim and decision-making skills. Later in practice, Wilson also connected on a deep throw to Van Jefferson, further cementing his readiness and boosting team confidence.

Meanwhile, Justin Fields has significantly turned heads within the Steelers' coaching staff. His performance in camp not only impressed the new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith but also showcased his potential as a versatile threat on the field. Smith commented, "He's a dangerous football player with the ball in his hands. It allows you to get creative. Maybe you change up a little bit of a defensive game plan for him. Certainly, he adds a different element."

While Fields will not start, his role within the team could be pivotal, particularly in the red zone where his ability as a read-option threat comes into play. The young quarterback's agility and dynamic playstyle could provide the Steelers with an edge in crucial game situations.

With Wilson at the helm and the promising Fields as a valuable asset, the Pittsburgh Steelers have constructed a formidable quarterback lineup. The season ahead holds much promise, grounded in Wilson's seasoned leadership and Fields' emerging talent.
