Veterans from the 2008 NFL Draft Who Continue to Shine
More than a decade after the 2008 NFL Draft, several veterans are still making an impact in the league. Joe Flacco, Josh Johnson, and Calais Campbell have proven their longevity and adaptability in the NFL.
Joe Flacco: The Comeback Kid
Joe Flacco has earned the title of the 2023 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Flacco currently holds the position of quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, demonstrating resilience and a formidable presence on the field. His performance this season underscores his reputation as a reliable and skilled quarterback.
Josh Johnson: A Steady Hand in Baltimore
Josh Johnson currently plays as a quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. Throughout his career, Johnson has been a journeyman, having played for multiple teams. His experience and versatility have made him a valuable asset to any team he joins, and the Ravens are no exception.
Calais Campbell: A Veteran Force with the Dolphins
Calais Campbell continues to be a defensive powerhouse, now playing as a defensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins. Campbell boasts an impressive track record, including six Pro Bowl appearances and a spot on the 2010s All-Decade team.
In 2023, Campbell had an outstanding season with the Atlanta Falcons. He started all 17 games, recorded 6.5 sacks, notched 56 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and accumulated 42 quarterback pressures. His exceptional performance showcased his enduring talent and commitment to the game.
Facing Retirement
At this stage in his career, Campbell openly considered retirement. However, his love for the game ultimately influenced his decision to continue playing. A heartfelt conversation with his family was crucial in reaching this decision. Acknowledging the evolution in his game due to age, Campbell emphasizes the importance of integrating strength and finesse into his technique.
"I thought about [retiring]," Campbell said. "It really came down to just with the family, talking to the wife and kids. Because physically, and the desire and love for the game, has never left, not even a little bit."
He elaborates on how he has adapted his game, saying, "I have to learn how to use other parts of my game, bring a lot more of the strength part but I still have enough finesse and everything else. I've got a full box of little tools."
Ultimately, it is his love for the game that keeps him motivated. "But what keeps me going though is a love for the game," Campbell affirms.
A New Opportunity with the Dolphins
Campbell's decision to join the Miami Dolphins was driven by his pursuit of a Super Bowl ring. The Dolphins' roster, enriched with six Pro Bowl players and additional new talent, presented a promising opportunity. Campbell values team chemistry highly and sees tremendous potential in the Dolphins' lineup.
"I feel like there's a really good opportunity here. Very talented team all over the field, both offense and defense," Campbell explains. "When you go through the roster and who you have, I just see so many people that I feel like we can really play together and really build that team chemistry you need and be a force to reckon with."
Reuniting with Anthony Weaver
One of the key factors influencing Campbell's decision was the opportunity to reunite with coach Anthony Weaver. Weaver, who served as Campbell's position coach for two seasons, has earned Campbellās respect and trust.
"The main reason I wanted to come here was because I really believe in who Anthony Weaver is as a coach and our relationship," Campbell noted. "We talked a lot during the process, and he knows what I'm capable of doing. He understands my mind and how I see the game, and he trusts it."
The Pursuit of the Vince Lombardi Trophy
Despite his numerous accomplishments, Campbell has yet to secure a Super Bowl title. He had one opportunity in Super Bowl XLIII with the Arizona Cardinals. Now with the Dolphins, Campbell remains focused on winning the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.
"What keeps me going though is a love for the game," Campbell reiterates. His dedication and passion underscore his resolve to contribute significantly to the Dolphins and leave a lasting legacy in the NFL.
